Cleaning and conditioning leather will seem quite simple if you think of it in terms of what it is - skin that is. Just like you should clean and maintain your skin, leather needs to be maintained in the same way to ensure it stays supple and resilient. Therefore keep your own skin care in mind while caring for your leather or vintage leather, and it is sure to outlast you. And I am hardly exaggerating it when I say this.

If you are a proud owner of some very special and delicate leather item, and you have no intention of taking any chances by cleaning such leather yourself, there are professional leather cleaners that can do the job for you.

There may be several leather cleaning experts in your area offer who will take your leather to their professional leather cleaning workshop and bring it back all clean and smelling fresh. Although the leather cleaning process is done by professionals, there may be chances that you find slight variations in color, texture, and shape; so it is for you to make sure choose the best guy for the job.

But if you are okay with cleaning leather at home, in many cases all that is necessary to clean leather is a damp cloth or a store bought leather cleaner. This will remove any surface dust or dirt. Make sure you follow manufacturer's instructions while using the leather cleaner. If the leather has been in contact with perspiration, water, and feels hard and stiff, that you may need is a more professional method to bring it back to its if not original at least nearly original feel.

If you are planning hand washing the leather, first treat spots or stains on the leather using luke warm water mixed with mild, preferably environmentally friendly cleaning agent or baby shampoo. IF too much lather forms with this soapy water, wipe the excess lather with a clean cloth. Next, rinse leather thoroughly by either running it through warm water or wiping with a damp cloth until it becomes absolutely dry. Finally use a clean towel to remove excess water and give it a final dry wipe. Always dry leather flat in a warm place that does not get direct sunlight or is not close by any strong heat source like fire, heater etc.

If you are planning to clean Leather in a Washing Machine let me warn you that this method may not be worth the risk if you are planning to clean vintage leather. Though some people do claim that cleaning leather using a washing machine that is adjusted on a delicate setting with warm or cool water is how they clean their leather, but it is one suggestion you’d rather steer clear of unless you want to take such a chance with your vintage leather.

Once you have cleaned your leather and it is absolutely dry then it is time to condition it.
